Which brings me to the subject of fun.
I'm not having enough.
And it was in conversation with a super-successful client the other day that both of us recognised that we weren't having enough fun.
In our own ways, we are both of working our nuts off, counter-acting the "recession" and making sure that our respective clients and patients get their problems identified and solved in sufficient numbers to guarantee our own well-being.
But, as I mentioned in a recent tweet and blog post, in a recession, EFFICIENCY + INNOVATION = PROFIT.
What I forgot to say was that all work and no play WILL make Jack a dull boy - and that will impact your relationships at home and at work.
Are you having enough fun?
One of my favourite films of 2008 was The Bucket List, in which Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman hilariously compiled and executed their lists of "must do" activities before terminal illness took its toll.
I've resisted the temptation to write a similar menu for myself, as it seemed somehow morbid to plan for a complete exit from the stage of life?
But, in conversation with my client, I asked a simple question:
"What events and activities bring a great big grin your face?"
His answers are confidential - but it became clear to both of that we just were not getting enough of those moments.
So here's my challenge.
Take a sheet of A4 paper (I do think a paper and pen are appropriate here and not a computer screen) and write down a list of things, situations and people that create BGM's - big grin moments - and then ask yourself how often they occur - and how frequently you have planned for them to occur in your schedule?
You are bound to ask - so if I show you mine will you show me yours?
Send me your list at [email protected] and I promise to keep them confidential - but wouldn't it be lovely to create an anonymous collection and see what makes us all tick?
Here's my list (no priority) - and I do not seek or require any feedback on it thank you:
Its not a complete list, nor permanent - but the real question is "how often do these things happen?" - and my current answer is "nowhere near enough".
So I've set my stall out to do something about that - and I challenge you to do the same.
Its all well and good making loads of money, investing it (and saving tax) - but unless there's some fun - what's the point?
What I delayed mentioning until now was all the irritable, cantankerous, miserable rich buggers I've met over the years.
Let's have some fun shall we?
